You want to pursue a degree in Engineering from Germany and they ask for TOEFL/IELTS scores. You want to pursue MBBS from China, they ask for TOEFL/IELTS scores. You want to pursue Political Science from Australia/Canada and again they ask for TOEFL/IELTS scores.
 
 
There are millions of students like you in India who, in order to pursue MBBS, Management, Engineering, Politics, Law, Designing, Journalism etc from abroad are preparing for various English proficiency tests like TOEFLIELTS, PTE, MELAB et al. 
 
 
Some of them are not well versed in English and have to try twice, thrice and some times more than that to be able to reach the destination of their dreams. The hindrance is just a set of 26 alphabets. But, what makes English such an important criterion? 
 
 
Well, among the 100 (approx) languages in the world, English is understood by one out of every four people in the world and is the most common language used for commercial, business or corporate purpose. Also, for the students seeking education abroad, most of the educational institutes are located in English speaking counties like UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland etc. Even countries like Germany, France, Dubai, Singapore and China offers courses in English pertaining to the usage of English language among international students. In fact, here in India English is the one of the most commonly spoken languages among young masses. 
 
 
Lakhs of Indians students prepare hard to get admission abroad through number of tests like GMAT, GRE, SAT and ACT. Along with these common testinations, students are also required to provide the proof of their English proficiency which will confirm that they have a command over English language to comprehend the education abroad (which is in English language only). While most students appear for tests like TOEFL and IELTS, there are countries which accept other tests as well.

IELTS or International English Language Testing System

IELTS is a globally accepted test to check English communication skills of students pursuing higher studies abroad or seeking job opportunities abroad.

IELTS has more than 800 test centers and locations in over 130 countries. Top countries are Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Canada, USA, etc.

PTE or Pearson Test of English

PTE or Pearson Test of English is one of the tests which measure the English proficiency of a student looking forward to study abroad.

PTE is accepted by various institutes in UK, US, Australia, Spain, France, China and many other countries.

TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language

TOEFL is conducted to assess the English proficiency of students who want to study abroad.

The TOEFL test is most widely accepted and respected English language test in the world. It is recognized by more than 8,000 colleges, universities, and agencies in more than 130 countries. 

CAEL or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment

CAEL or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment is a standardised test for English for admission to universities/institutes/colleges in Canada at undergraduate and graduate level.

Along with Canada many universities in USA and Europe have recognized CAEL scores. 

CPE or Certificate of Proficiency in English

The CPE exam is conducted to evaluate a student’s proficiency in English.

Cambridge English exams are accepted by over 13,500 universities, employers and governments around the world. 

MELAB or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery

MELAB evaluates advanced English language competences of non-native English speakers.

Countries like USA, Canada, UK, Australia accepts MELAB.

APIEL or Advanced Placement International English Language Test

APIEL examination allows a student to participate in American Colleges and Universities.

APIEL is widely accepted in US and other countries as well.

CAE or Cambridge English Advanced

CAE is also conducted to test the English skills of a student.

More than 3,000 educational institutions, businesses and government departments around the world accept Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) as proof of high-level achievement. 

TSE or Test of Spoken English

TSE is conducted to test proficiency in spoken English.

The test is widely accepted in USA and various other countries.

 

How to prepare for English Proficiency Tests?

Though there cannot be any set pattern to clear any exam in the world. All you need is practice. Keep your basics clear. Read, write and speak more of English and keep practicing through sample papers is all that can do wonders for you.
 

Which English Proficiency Test best suits me?

There is no such criterion for choosing a test. You can take any test depending on the acceptability of that test in a particular country or course.
