VIDS has been set up by Victoria state government & Australia India Institute

Australia is beckoning bright young doctoral candidates from India to pursue their Ph.Ds from the Victorian universities. What makes the offer more attractive are the ten Victoria-India Doctoral Scholarships (VIDS 2013) worth AUD $90,000 each that they plan to award to deserving Indian candidates!


About the Victoria-India Doctoral Scholarships (VIDS) Programme:

In the VIDS programme, ten scholars from India are awarded 90,000 Australian dollars each (about $94,400) to pursue their Ph.Ds from varsities in Australia's Victoria state starting 2012. This scholarship has been set up by the state government of Victoria and the Australia India Institute. 9 universities (Deakin University, La Trobe University, Monash University, RMIT University, Swinburne University, Australian Catholic University, The University of Melbourne, University of Ballarat and Victoria University) have agreed to provide a full tuition waiver to Indian students and the scholarships will support living costs and education-related travel.



The Victoria India Doctoral Scholarships (VIDS) intend to attract India’s best PhD candidates to Victoria’s leading universities. These scholarships valued at $90,000 each over three years is an expression of the Victorian Government’s commitment to engage Indian students in their nine universities.


How to Apply for VIDS 2013:

1. To be eligible, you must 

  • be a citizen of the Republic of India,
  • intend to complete the majority of their doctoral work in Victoria,
  • not hold a qualification regarded to be equivalent to an Australian research doctorate and
  • be willing to be an ambassador for the program.


2. You must be accepted into a doctoral program of one of the nine Victorian universities of your choice. For more information, please contact the participating universities on the “Study Melbourne” website.

3. To be successful, you must be short listed from the Victorian university of your choice, then be considered by the selection committee. Only the successful applicants will be made an offer by the Victorian Government.

2012 VIDS Scholars


In February 2012, ten Indian PhD students were awarded the very first lot of the Victoria India Doctoral Scholarships (VIDS) by the Premier of Victoria, Ted Baillieu in New Delhi.

The ten recipients of the Victorian India Doctoral Scholarships 2012 were:

  1. Mrs Sayali Shah, University of Melbourne
  2. Mr Debabrata Sikdar, Monash University
  3. Mr Sathish Thirunavukkarasu, Monash University
  4. Mr Buvaneshwaran Venugopal, Deakin University
  5. Ms Sreejoyee Ghosh, Deakin University
  6. Mr Vignesh Rathinasamy, La Trobe University
  7. Ms Jyotsna Nagpal, La Trobe University
  8. Mr Rohan Shah, Swinburne University of Technology
  9. Mr Abishek Suresh, RMIT University
  10. Ms Hitu Sood, Australian Catholic University

 

Tom Calder who is the Trade Commissioner of the Australian High Commission told HTCampus that there has been an increase of 30% in Indian student applications to Victorian Universities this year. This, no doubt is a signal of good times ahead for study abroad opportunities for Indian students in Australia.
